Texture
Texture is how a surface looks and feels, rough, smooth, glossy, matte, soft, coarse. It’s especially important in neutral or monochrome schemes where colour is more restrained. Layering different textures, for example, linen upholstery, a wool rug, a smooth stone benchtop and a lightly brushed timber floor, adds depth and interest without needing lots of colour. I always consider how light interacts with texture. Some materials look best in soft, grazing light, while others are more forgiving in high-traffic areas.
