Elevation
An elevation is a 2D drawing showing one face of a building or room as if you’re standing straight in front of it. Where a floor plan looks down from above, an elevation shows height, proportions and how elements align vertically. Interior elevations are essential for joinery, tiling and lighting: they show exactly how high benchtops, shelves, mirrors, wall lights and tiles are set out. Exterior elevations show window positions, roof forms and how different cladding materials meet. I use elevations to remove guesswork for trades. If it’s drawn properly, everyone on site can see exactly what’s intended and where each element sits.
