Balustrade
A balustrade is the protective barrier you see along staircases, balconies, decks and terraces. It’s made up of the vertical posts (balusters) and a handrail, and it’s there first and foremost for safety, but it can also be a strong design feature. In Sydney homes, balustrades might be frameless glass to keep ocean views clear, slimline metal for a contemporary look, or painted timber for a more classic feel. Whatever the style, balustrades must comply with Australian Standards, including minimum heights and maximum gap sizes, especially where there’s a significant change in level. When I’m designing balustrades, I’m always balancing safety, compliance and aesthetics. The aim is something that feels light and minimal, works with the architecture and doesn’t block natural light or key views.
