Finish
A finish is the final surface treatment on a material, the thing you see and touch. It might be paint sheen (matte, satin, gloss), the surface of stone (honed vs polished), the treatment on timber (oiled, brushed, stained) or the coating on metal. The right finish depends on how the space is used, how much light it gets and how much maintenance you’re prepared for. For example, in busy kitchens I often lean towards honed or lightly textured surfaces that are more forgiving of everyday marks than high gloss. During selections, I always encourage clients to look at samples in natural light and consider how finishes will age, not just how they look on day one.
